A policy has been announced that allows you designate a "legacy contact," who will be able to post announcements on a timeline after someone's death.
The designated person won't be able to read your private messages, but will be able to control your friend requests, profile and header photos.
However, if you want to avoid putting someone in that awkward position, you can opt to have the account deleted.
