YouTube launches paid subscription service… but they may need to rethink the name

They're going to red-faced over this one

YouTube have finally done what everyone has expected them to do for years by launching a new ad-free service for $9.99 (approximately €8.85) a month.

Like streaming service Spotify, subscribers to YouTube’s new premium service will be able to save videos for offline viewing and they will produce new, exclusive content for those who sign up.

The new service will be called YouTube Red. But they may want to reconsider the name, after some people pointed out the fact that it bears a resemblance to name of porn site RedTube.

They’re not the first to make this mistake, after the UK Treasury was saved at the last second from naming their new video channel Red Tube, but we expected more from YouTube themselves.

The only explanation is that everyone in the naming team was too embarrassed to admit their knowledge of the original RedTube.

YouTube Red will launch in the US on October 28, with international subscriptions becoming available some time in 2016.
