An election in Ireland is imminent, and though it promises to be exciting, it is unlikely to be as gripping as the one in the 1999 Alexander Payne black comedy Election, starring Matthew Broderick as a teacher who develops such a hatred for one of his students (Reese Whiterspoon) that he conspires to fix a school election so that she doesn't win. Imagine Ferris Bueller growing up to become a depressed and bitter educator.

Sport pick: Mosconi Cup Day 1: Europe v USA, Sky Sports 4, 7pm

The Ryder Cup of 9-ball pool begins at Bethnal Green today. The American team, featuring the legendary Johnny Archer, come in as defending champions, though Europe were the victors in the previous two editions. Sid Waddell will be on the mike with his inimitable commentary.
