A 73-year-old former Minister has announced on her Twitter account that she will run in the next general election for Fianna Fail.

Mary O'Rourke, a sitting TD who also previously held office between 1982 and 2002, will run in the Longford-Westmeath constituency.

She has held numerous ministerial positions in the past including Education, Health and Enterprise and is the aunt of Brian and Conor Lenihan.

She caused controversy in 2006 for thanking her campaign helpers for working "like blacks".

“Decision made. I am putting myself forward to run in the forthcoming general election. Convention for same will be held Monday, Jan 3rd,” - Mary O'Rourke.
