Andy Lee to challenge for Martinez’s world title

Andy Lee could be in line for the fight of his life next spring against world champion Sergio Martinez on HBO next spring.

The Irish middleweight has been confirmed by Martinez’ promoter Lou DiBella as the leading challenger.

Less than a day after Lee’s scheduled fight on the Klitschko-Chiisora card was cancelled he can now tentatively look forward to a world title fight.

If it gets the green light, the fight would most likely go ahead take place at the Madison Square Garden Theatre on 12 March, 2011.

Lee had initially hoped to fight in the same venue on the same date, but an anticipated all-Irish St. Patrick’s week matchup with countryman John Duddy was not arranged.

The Limerick man will have the chance of a lifetime instead and may become the first Irishman since Steve Collins to challenge for the world middleweight title and win.
