Andy Townsend the clear winner in a poll to find the worst football co-commentator on TV

Is he really that much worse than Michael Owen?

Is he really that much worse than Michael Owen?

According to followers of The Independent Twitter account, he’s a lot worse than the monotone BT Sports commentator and former Manchester United and Liverpool striker, who finished a distant second behind former Ireland captain Townsend in a poll to find the worst co-commentator on TV.

To be more specific, The Independent wanted to determine the worst football co-commentator that forced people to turn off live coverage even if they wanted to watch the match live and after 2,500 votes in four hours, Townsend finished on top of the pile with 37% of the vote, ahead of Owen (23%), Mark Lawrenson (13%), Phil Neville (10%) and Clarke Carlisle, Niall Quinn, Alan Smith and Gary Neville, who all had less than 10% of the vote.

In fairness to Townsend, he wouldn’t have been helped by the fact that he would still have been fresh in people’s minds after he was trending on Twitter for his ‘analysis’ of England’s clash with Estonia on Sunday evening.

Of course, Townsend also probably wasn’t helped by his consistent use of Townsend-isms such as ‘For me Clive’ and repeated patronising shouts of ‘That’s better’ and maybe this poll is a sign that Townsend’s airtime needs to be reduced just a little bit.

Back to the tactics truck with you Andy.
