‘Arry: Beckham keen on Spurs loan move

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has said that David Beckham is keen on joining Spurs on loan from LA Galaxy this month.

The 35-year old traditionally makes a jaunt to Europe at this time of year in order to keep his fitness up during the break in the Major League Soccer (MLS) season, which doesn’t resume until March 15.

Beckham enjoyed successful loan spells with AC Milan in 2009 and again last year and Redknapp would be happy to have him around at White Hart Lane for a couple of months.

"David fancies it. He would like to come and play here," said Redknapp. "He's a fantastic lad and role model in the way he conducts himself and plays."

"We'd have to [move quickly]. I've left it to the people at the club and they're talking to whoever they have to talk to at his club," said Redknapp, who believes Beckham will be a role model for the young players at Spurs and will provide cover for Aaron Lennon on the right side of midfield.

"He'd be a great influence on the younger players," Redknapp added.

"I remember when I was at Portsmouth and bought Teddy Sheringham for a season and used to tell the young lads to watch Teddy practice and train."

"We've got no-one else to play on the right. David Bentley keeps picking up injuries on Friday morning. It's a no brainer."

Redknapp doesn’t buy into the suggestion that Beckham is past it and wouldn’t cut it at Premier League level, nor does he believe that probably the richest footballer on the planet is doing it for the money.

"I'm sure he can still do a great job at the top level, otherwise I wouldn't bother," said the Tottenham manager on Friday.

"He isn't going to come here and get big money - we aren't massive payers at this club. But he wants to come over here to the freezing cold and play football.

"Doesn't that tell you something about the boy that he lives in Los Angeles and might be a billionaire?"

Beckham has previously been linked with similar moves to Leicester City and West Ham United, while he played down speculation linking him with a move to Everton in November on the basis that as a former Manchester United player and still very much a Manchester United fan, ‘it would be too close to home’.

Should the move to Spurs come about, Beckham could be in line to face former club Manchester United in what would likely be a ridiculously over-hyped encounter at White Hart Lane on 16 January.
