On the 25th anniversary of Hillsborough, RTE’s Des Cahill looked back into the archives for this moving tribute.

RTÉ’s Des Cahill marked the anniversary of Hillsborough this morning with a piece of audio that was poignant and touching, bringing home the sheer scale and impact of the tragic events that occurred 25 years ago today.

Cahill himself comments that he was sent over to cover the aftermath, and he spoke a bit about how emotional he found it, before presenting a compilation of some of the news coverage at the time, including the live commentary on the BBC by Peter Jones, which describes the horrific scenes. It is difficult to listen back to, given we know now the extent of the tragedy, which he didn’t at the time.

There are also stories from John Aldridge and Alan Hansen about their experiences afterwards dealing with families who lost loved ones which are equally harrowing, but make this a hugely touching tribute to the tragedy.
