After a desperate start Arsenal managed to gain a foothold against Bayern Munich before this killer, and slightly fortunate, third goal by Mario Mandzukic.
Even the most biased Arsenal fan would have to agree that on the evidence of tonight, Bayern Munich are the better team and deserve to go through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
There is always the second-leg of course but a two-goal deficit is surely too much for the Londoners to overcome.
For a period it looked like they would have a decent result to pack with them to Germany. After falling behind to two first-half goals from Toni Kroos and Thomas Muller, a much better second-half showing saw Lukas Podolski get the home side back into it and they were increasing the pressure on the Bayern back-line.
But with 12 minutes to go an exquisite move by the visitors was fortunately bundled home by Mario Mandzukic. For the way they played, and defended, they probably deserved this little bit of luck.
Arsenal will need a slice of luck the size of Bavaria to get through in the second leg now.
