Bono’s £40m Spider-Man musical suffers another crisis as lead actress quits

It's becoming a show so calamitous that it could eventually inspire it's own musical, as the most expensive Broadway show of all time has now lost its lead actress.

The production of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark (whose score has been written by Bono and The Edge) has cost over £40 million and has suffered constant delays and a recent series of accidents that have left four performers injured. The problems are surmounting on the seemingly doomed musical as reports suggest that actress Natalie Mendoza has left the show.

Ms Mendoza, 30, who plays a villainess during the show, has thus far left only a cryptic Twitter message on her current status in the production: “Do not ask the Lord to guide your footsteps, if you are not willing to move your feet.” The producers have not yet denied whether the actress is leaving.

Previews for Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark were pushed back twice, while two performers have already injured themselves due to the show's complicated system of trapezes used to signify Spider-Man's movement. Mendoza herself suffered a concussion after being hit by a falling rope on the opening night of previews while stunt double Christopher Tierney fell from a platform in the middle of a performance, fracturing his skull and three vertebrae.

According to numerous critics, the show's current sell-out previews owe more to musicalgoers wanting to see what happens next, or what terribly calamity might befall the show, rather than any genuine interest in the production. Nonetheless safety inspections are ongoing and it is thought that due to the show's high cost, it will need years of sell-our performances to break even.  The musical officially opened Monday February 2 2011.
