We know that sometimes zoo keepers have to go above and beyond the call of duty, but a Chinese zookeeper went just a little bit too far recently.
According to a number of reports (some of which are questioning the authenticity of such a wacky story), such as this one in The Huffington Post, Chinese Zoo Keeper Zhang Bangsheng helped save the life of a three-month old monkey by licking his bum for an hour in order to help him excrete a peanut that was causing an obstruction in his body.
Bangsheng spotted the young Francois Langur looking a bit worse for wear and surrounded by peanut shells that had been thrown in by visitors at the Wuham Zoo.
Realising that the problem stemmed from the monkey ingesting something that it was not yet fit to do, Bangsheng rushed to the monkey’s aid and cleaned its bottom with warm water before licking the area for quite a long period of time before it was able to get rid of what could have proved a fatal obstruction.
It's a method that we had never previously heard of and we can only hope that Bangsheng had, or else his actions, although life-saving, come across as very bizarre indeed.
The 50-year old zoo keeper reportedly laughed with satisfaction afterwards, happy that his actions had saved the monkey’s life, but probably even more so because his harrowing if helpful life saving procedure was finally over and done with.
Although the veracity of the reports are being questioned, if proved true Bangsheng could well earn a promotion, not just for his heroic deeds, but also due to unconfirmed reports from fellow zoo keepers that he is a bit of an arse-kisser anyway.
