The GAA has published its annual report and while it is lengthy, there are some interesting facts and figures from 2012.
By Declan Whooley
The report was offered for public consumption yesterday and is 116 pages long, so needless to say it is text heavy with many, many different accounts. We had a trawl through it so you don’t have to, but things are going pretty well in the Association all things considered with a total revenue of over €52 million for the year ending October 2012.
Here are some of the details that caught our eye from the report:
€201,985 – the loss the GAA are making on the often maligned Christy Ring competition
430 – number of insurance claims for cruciate knee ligament injuries, costing €1.32 million in payouts. This figure is down from 470 in 2011
15 – the percentage increase in commercial revenues in 2012, coming to a total of €2.3 million
€50 – gate receipts from the Lory Meagher Cup match between Leitrim and Warwickshire, the lowest recorded match ticket sales recorded in the report. In case you didn’t know, Warwickshire won the game by seven points, with Tyrone eventually winning the hurling competition.
50/50 – the split between gate receipts between the hurling and football championships, give or take. The football championship pulled in €10.9 million while the hurling equivalent wasn’t far behind with €10.6 million, helped in part by the All-Ireland Final replay, which generated a further €2.4 million.
This represented a huge increase on the previous year, when gate receipts for the small ball game were only 40 per cent of the football championship.
