Colourful Characters: Charlie Sheen

Yeah sure, we’ve chatted about previous colourful characters like James Franco, Paul Newman and Bruce Willis but is there anyone really more colourful than Charlie Sheen?

No, is the answer that Sheen himself would (probably) say. While he downs a pint of tiger blood. While smoking cigarettes through his nose. While being a practising Warlock. Winning. He makes those other guys look like Mother Teresa’s henchmen.

In fact, Charlie Sheen is already so cool that he doesn’t even have to do anything himself to be cool, his family take care of that for him – his dad Martin Sheen is Jed Bartlett, the greatest President the United States has ever known and his brother Emilio Estevez coached the Mighty Ducks for god’s sake. Enough said.

Sheen has been making headlines for all sorts of reasons over the past number of years but he first came to prominence with early roles in the original 1984 Red Dawn and his impossibly cool wooing of Jennifer Grey in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. The fact that he also happened to be playing a convicted felon in that film was probably just a coincidence, right?

As Gordon Gekko’s financial protege Bud Fox in Wall Street he made it fashionable to wear red braces with a white shirt and as Lieutenant Topper Harley in the Hot Shots! films he helped get rid of Saddam Hussein years before George Bush had the idea of doing it. Oh and he also shot a bad guy with a startled chicken.

And then came the infamous Two and a Half Men series of events. After succesfully dominating US viewing figures for a number of years and being the highest-paid US TV star, Sheen was fired from the show after publicly making derogatory comments about the show’s creator, Chuck Lorre. He’s since returned to our screens in Anger Management – a show that nobody watches because it’s much more fun to watch YouTube vidoes of old Charlie Sheen footage instead.

In recent weeks, Irish fans were treated to our own little bit of Charlie Sheen gold when he was in town to drink the finest Guinness “our anscestors ever brewed” and to introduce his good friend and “greatest guitarist in the history of sound” Slash.

And so what next for the self-confessed “actor, producer, winner?”

Well, it’s a foolish man who tries to predict what Charlie Sheen’s next move will be but he does star in the new Wes Anderson film A Glimpse Inside The Mind Of Charlie Swan III, so our advice is to keep an eye on your local cinema’s release schedule. That or the breaking news headlines.
