Connolly Station evacuated; major crash in Merrion Square

On a turbulent morning in the capital, Connolly Station has been evacuated because of a bomb scare and a major crash has caused havoc in Merrion Square.

A suspicious device was discovered close to Connolly Station just after 9am this morning and the station has been evacuated as a result .

An emergency response team has been deployed to examine the device while all services to and from Connolly Station have been affected as a result.

According to Irish Rail, “all services will bypass Connolly until further notice”. Dart and Commuter services are still running, but won’t stop at Connolly.

The incident occurred only days after part of the north inner city was sealed off after a suspicious device was discovered between Amiens Street and Talbot Street.

Meanwhile, in Merrion Square this morning, a major crash involving a bus and several vehicles has caused traffic delays in the surrounding areas.

The bus involved in the incident knocked over a lamppost, while a jeep was sent through the railings of Merrion Square Park as a result of the collision.

Gardai and the fire brigade are working to clear the area, while traffic on Merrion Square North has been reduced to one lane as a result.

It is believed that there were no injuries in the incident, although extensive damage was caused.

Update (11.20am): Connolly Station has now reopened, with full services to resume subject to some delays.
