Galway and Antrim should remain in the Leinster hurling championship after their trial period in the province comes to an end in 2011, GAA President Christy Cooney has said.
The two counties got the go-ahead to compete against Leinster clubs after a Special Congress gave the nod to a trial run back in 2008.
Cooney believe the experiment was a success and points to the Leinster semi-final thriller between Galway and Kilkenny which otherwise would not have come about.
“I think it is there to stay,†Cooney told the Irish Independent. “I think it brings a better balance to the hurling championship and it is better for Galway and Antrim as it will show whether they are really improving or not.â€
The extension of the trial period, or a decision to make it permanent, could mean matches in the Leinster Championship being played outside the province for the first time.
