Cracking picture of Roy Keane meeting Nelson Mandela in 1993

We doubt Roy Keane gets star struck too often, but it’s not every day you get to meet a man of the stature of Nelson Mandela, as Roy did 20 years ago.

We doubt Roy Keane gets star struck too often, but it’s not every day you get to meet a man of the stature of Nelson Mandela, as Roy did 20 years ago.

Tributes have flowed in to the man known as ‘Madiba’ after he passed away aged 95 last night and rarely has there been such universal acclaim for one person, a man who was a hero and inspiration to all in South Africa and beyond.

Plenty of historic pictures of Mandela have been doing the rounds since his death but from an Irish perspective and a sporting one, there aren’t many as impactful as the former South African President meeting former Irish captain and current Ireland assistant manager Roy Keane while he was on a pre-season tour of South Africa with Manchester United in 1993.

Meeting Mandela clearly had the same effect on Roy that it had on virtually everyone that shared his company throughout his long life and his loss will be mourned in South Africa and beyond for some time to come.

RIP Nelson Mandela.
