Facebook today revealed that a bug has caused the accidental release of the data of around 6 million users

A bug is being blamed for the accidental release of private data of a huge number of Facebook users today.

According to a statement on the Facebook Security page earlier, the tech heads figure that a bug meant that “6 million Facebook users had email addresses or telephone numbers shared”.

The problem arose when users who went to the Download Your Information (DYI) tool were accidentally given information of other users instead, which had been stored alongside theirs to help with the friend recommendation process.

However, they stated that the information was, in most cases, shared with only one person by accident, and that no financial information had been shared with anyone.

For now, the tool has been disabled until they figure out what the problem is and how to fix the breach.
