The bumper Gameweek 37 may have left most mini-leagues sown up but like the title race itself, there may be a few set to go right down to the wire.
Transfers will be far less important than in other gameweeks as with just one game of the season left to play, the man you bring in will only get one opportunity to earn you points.
The more important decision fantasy managers will be making for the final game of the season therefore is who they will award the captaincy to. With that in mind, we will be taking a look at who you should entrust the captaincy to in a bid to maximise your double points haul.
Frank Lampard
Frank Lampard has once again shown his ability by coming out as the Fantasy Premier’s top scoring player in any positition. His return of 268 is way ahead of Cesc Fabregas as the next best midfielder at 214 and the next best player in Didier Drogba who has registered 226. Lampard has scored 21 goals from midfield, regularly chips in with assists and has picked up an impressive 35 bonus points. His recent games have been predictably strong – 35 points from three games. Lampard is been so consistent that many managers have been successful by picking him as captain for the first game of the season and then leaving him with the armband until today. It’s a basic strategy, but one which is hard to argue with.
Carlos Tevez
Fans of the game will have been enjoying the Tasmanian devil-like displays of Carlos Tevez since West Ham stunned teams across Europe by securing the signature of the sought-after Argentinean. He blue hot and cold at United but has really come into his own this season at Man City. He scored 23 goals including five braces and two hat-tricks. If he has one of his big weeks and you have him as captain, his double points haul could be enough to edge you ahead in your mini-league.
Wayne Rooney
United may need a minor miracle from Wigan in their crucial tie against Chelsea, but it will all be academic if Fergusson’s men don’t do the business in their game against Stoke. Rooney has been on fire this season – when he has been available. However, his recent haul has been disappointing by any measure – seven points from his last seven games. That said, Rooney has repeatedly attempted to calm agitated English sports reporters by pointing out that he’s back to full fitness with time to spare until the World Cup. With Berbatov misfiring spectacularly, United’s slim hopes of retaining their title will very much rest on Rooney’s shoulders.
Steven Gerrard
Hull’s chances of survival have disappeared while Liverpool have found themselves well and truly out of the ‘big four’. It has turned the upcoming fixture between the two teams into a bit of a non-event. However, will the stinging criticism being leveled at Gerrard be enough to trigger a strong performance? With a place in the starting line up in the England team still to be nailed down, it might just be. Gerrard has had a hit-and-miss season by his standards which included two brief lay-offs. Still, the scouser with the unusually small forehead managed a return of 154 points which has been enough to sneak him into the top five of the midfielder score chart.
Best of the Irish
Anto Moyles is once again showing why he has been in-or-around the top of both the Irish and the overall Fantasy Premier Leagues. He had another fantastic week, taking in 90 points thanks to heavy representation from Man City and strong choices elsewhere. His Chris Eagles XI side was briefly challenged by Gerard Greaney’s Mary’s Cats side, but they have since slipped to third. Dan Murphy’s Sean Phobal FC is now the most likely challenger to Anto, but at this stage of the game, Dan has a bigger hill to climb than United and in all likelihood, the title is going to Anto.
Sadly, it looks like Anto’s dream of winning the tournament out right is over. He has slipped to third and is now 43 points off the leader, Englishman Jon Reeson. Ah well, he could still sneak into second overall with a strong showing this week and second out of 2,315,436 players isn’t half bad by any measure.
The Irish top five is as follows:
Team                                      Manager                                GW                            Overall
The Chris Eagles XI             Anto Moyles                        90                             2532
Sean Phobal FC                    Dan Murphy                          81                              2508
Mary’s Cats                           Gerard Greaney                    71                              2504
Feed the Yak                         Jonathan Hore                       76                              2469
Spoofers                               Paul Griffin                           88                              2469
