FIFA set to discuss bringing sin-bins into professional football

It's the equivalent of a naughty step, and it could be coming to the Premier League soon.

FIFA are set to consider introducing sin-bins in football, with a new system already under trial in the Netherlands.

Time penalties for players will be looked at when the new advisory panels to the International Football Association Board (IFAB) convene in March.

The two panels are made up of former players and managers on one, with the other consisting of referees and legal experts.

They will advise the IFAB on changes to the laws of the game, with sin-bins and obligatory red cards for conceding penalties thought to be high on the priority list for discussion.

Jonathan Ford, the chief executive of the Welsh FA, says that sending players from the field of play for five or ten minutes might not be far from becoming reality.

“Sin-bins have been mooted in the past and there is a trial going on in Dutch football which has generated a fair amount of interest so one would expect that it will be one of topics the new advisory panels take up,” he said.

“The idea of the panels is that they will be more proactive and they will be able to look at these things and debate them while the IFAB’s role will be as the final decision-makers.”
