A lack of live football on a Saturday was a strange sensation but thankfully there were enough brilliant goals on Friday to keep us going for the weekend. In no particular order, here are our five favourites.
Gylfi Sigurdsson (Iceland v Slovenia)
With Gareth Bale about the rest of the Spurs side are given precious little opportunities to show what they can do at set-pieces, but the Welshman might let Gylfi Sigurdsson take the odd one in future after he scored with this brilliant effort against Slovenia on Friday night.
Luis Suarez (Uruguay v Paraguay)
Comments from the Liverpool striker about his future on Merseyside may indeed have been lost in translation, but this is a good goal in any man’s language.
Aiman Al Hagri (Yemen v Malaysia)
What do you mean you haven’t heard of Aiman Al Hagri? To be honest we don’t know Aiman from Adam ourselves, but we’ll be hearing his name a lot more in the future if he can keep on scoring goals like this.
Thabo Matlaba (South Africa v Central African Republic)
We know that modern day footballs can deviate wildly in the air but the change in direction in Matlab’s strike was so noticeable that we had to check a few times to see whether it actually took a deflection or not. Pity the poor goalkeeper trying to save it.
Ashley Young (England v San Marino)
OK so it was only against San Marino and Young was afforded far more space than he would get in the Premier League or in other international matches, but he’ll rarely hit a shot as sweetly as the one in the video below. The crossbar is probably still rattling as a result.
