Gallery: Meteor launches superfast 4G services for Irish mobile users

Superfast mobile internet is finally here...

Oisin Collins

Meteor made Irish telecoms history today by becoming the first mobile operator in the country to launch a high speed 4G mobile service and they’ve recruited the help of Holly Carpenter, Rosanna Davison and a few supercars to celebrate the news.

With superfast mobile data speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G, Ireland’s consumption of digital media is set to soar to a whole new level.

Meteor 4G will enable customers with compatible 4G devices to download video and audio content faster, stream video on handsets and tablets with little to no buffering, as well as upload photos and videos to social media almost instantaneously.

So how fast can you expect your mobile internet to be? Meteor expects peak speeds will reach between 20 to 25Mbps, and in technical trials the operator has clocked speeds of more than 60Mbps.

The 4G service is available from today for Meteor bill-pay customers in Dublin, Athlone and Carlow, with Cork, Limerick and Galway coming on stream over the coming weeks. However, you’ll need a 4G compatible phone such as Samsung GS4 and GS4 Mini, Sony Xperia Z, HTC One, Nokia Lumia 925 or the iPhone 5.

Keep your eyes peeled in Dublin City tomorrow as the four supercars pictured above (a McLaren MP4 12c, Ferrari 458 Spider, Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera and an Aston Martin Vanquish) will be out driving around the capital.
