Good news for Meyler as ruptured cruciate injury ruled out

There was good news for Sunderland and Ireland followers last night as scans revealed that David Meyler did not suffer a ruptured cruciate ligament, as had originally been feared.

Meyler collapsed in agony during Sunderland’s victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park on Wednesday night, sparking rumours that he had suffered a repeat of the ruptured cruciate ligament injury that first occurred against Manchester United at the tail end of last season.

Scans on the injury revealed that the ligament is intact, however and Meyler will consult a specialist today over the treatment and length of rehabilitation required.

“The great news we got late last night is that Meyler has not ruptured the cruciate ligament,” said Sunderland manager Steve Bruce.

“It's still intact - that's what the scans have told us, which is great news for us. He has still wrenched his knee horribly.

“We will know more in the next few hours in terms of time schedules, but he will be out for weeks,” he added.
