Good to see that Pope Francis is a keen football fan

When it comes to judging the merits of a Pope, we are more clueless than QPR’s financial advisors. But seeing as Pope Francis is a football fan, he gets the JOE seal of approval.

Last night Pope Francis was elected as the man to take over in the Vatican, and there seemed to be more excitement over the voting than the Eurovision back in the day.

As soon as the 76 year-old Argentinian was announced as the big cheese, some frantic research was done into his background. And the most interesting thing that was discovered – as far as we’re concerned – is that he is a big San Lorenzo supporter.

No sooner had Fran been announced to the world, than the Argentinian side we were taking to Twitter to show a few pics of Jorge Bergoglio pinning his colours to the mast.

His club membership card shows he has been officially affiliated with the club since 2008 and it is fitting that San Lorenzo are his favourite team. The club was named after local priest Father Lorenzo Massa, who let children play football in his church's yard so they wouldn't have to do it amongst the dangerous trams in the street.

They team currently sit 12th in the Primera Division, but with a little divine intervention, should expect to rise up the table rather quickly.
