Hacker group LulzSec forced The Sun and The Times to take down their websites last night after putting up a fake story about the death of Rupert Murdoch.

LulzSec also claim that they have access to the e-mail addresses and passwords of The Sun’s newspaper staff, while they also published what they claim is Rebekah Brooks’ email address and boasted that they knew her password combination.

Murdoch and News International have attracted great notoriety of late in light of the phone hacking scandal that has resulted in the closure of the News of the World and a number of high profile resignations, including  former NOTW editor and News International CEO Rebekah Brooks and a number of high profile police officials in the UK.

The group placed a hoax story on the Sun’s website last night which claimed that Murdoch had died after taking poison and then redirected pages to their Twitter account.

The website of the red top was back to normal within a few hours, but not before the group posted a gloating tweet on their Twitter page and a link to the story, which has since been removed, but you can see for yourself below.

LulzSec, set up in May, has scarcely been out of the headlines recently, first gaining notoriety for hacking video game developers Bethesda Softworks and indie building title Minecraft, before starting up their own telephone request line for their 200,000+ followers to personally request LulzSec’s next victim.

Last month, they published a file purporting to contain over 62,000 web accounts for Facebook, PayPal and Twitter.

In addition to their recent alleged CIA hack, the group recently boasted that they had “blissfully obtained records of every single citizen who gave their records to the security-illiterate UK government for the 2011 census.”

LulzSec have threatened to carry out further hacking attacks on News International websites and tweeted the following message last night: “Arrest us. We dare you. We are the unstoppable hacking generation and you are a wasted old sack of shit, Murdoch. ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWER!”
