Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods might have been child prodigies, but they ain’t got nothin’ on 12-year old Chinese golfer Ye Wocheng, who will make his European Tour debut in May.
Thanks to a brilliant two-under par total at the Western China qualifier, Wocheng may well play in a European Tour event before he hits puberty when he tees off in the Volvo China Open, an event on the European and OneAsia Tour which kicks off on May 2.
According to The Guardian, Wocheng, whose father caddied for him at the qualifying event, led the field after nine holes on the second day, having posted a round of four-under par on the opening day and added a string of birdies early doors on day two.
Wocheng wilted on the back nine, however, even posting a triple bogey eight on the par five 16th, but he had enough done at that stage and eventually finished on two under par overall to claim the third and last place on offer.
By competing in the Volvo Open, Wocheng will become the youngest player to compete in the event, beating the record of his compatriot Guan Tianlang, who was a grizzled veteran by comparison when he competed as a 13-year old last year.
If they continue at this rate, there’ll be five-year olds competing by 2021 and babies competing before they can even walk in 2025.
Who said golf wasn’t a young man’s game, eh?
