It’s been a while, but Paul O’Connell makes his long awaited return to action tomorrow after being named in the Munster ‘A’ team to face Leinster.
By Declan Whooley
After just two games this season and an operation in the New Year, the inspirational second-row has been named in the starting XV that will take to the field at the UL Bowl tomorrow in Limerick.
A debilitating injury to his lower back has had a hugely disruptive impact on his season, but is a timely boost ahead of a daunting trip to The Stoop next month to face high-flying Harlequins in the Heineken Cup.
For now, the immediate focus is tomorrow’s clash with Leinster and will no doubt be a little rusty after such a long period on the sidelines.
The return will also rekindle hopes of a possible third Lions tour ahead of the summer trip to Australia. A fully-fit O’Connell would surely be a no-brainer, but fitness and match practice are two major stumbling blocks.
Great to see the big man back, though we’re not sure the Leinster management team felt the same when they saw the Munster sheet.
