Honours even between Everton and Sunderland

A late Mikel Arteta goal was enough to rescue a point for Everton after a terrific game at the Stadium of Light.

The Toffees opened the scoring in the sixth minute thanks to a typical goal from Australian attacking midfielder Tim Cahill.

Seamus Coleman played a cross-field ball to Leighton Baines, who proceeded to whip the ball in for the waiting Cahill, who headed home brilliantly for his seventh goal in ten games against the Black Cats.

The lead only lasted sixteen minutes, however, as Danny Wellbeck proded home after some fantastic build-up play from the reborn Boudewijn Zenden.

Wellbeck was on the scoresheet again in 70th minute, when he got on the end of Kieran Richardson’s shot – it was the Manchester United loanees third goal in three games.

Arteta was to rescue the game, however, when his left-footed shot deflected off of Phil Bardsley in the 84th minute, and into the back of the net.

The draw moves Sunderland into the top seven, while Everton move up two places to 14 th in the Premier League.
