Some will remember him for his football commentary, other still for Dancing on Ice, but most people of a certain generation will remember Tony Gubba as the voice of International Superstar Soccer 98.

For sports fans of a certain generation, there was an outpouring of sadness today at the death of commentator Tony Gubba, who passed away aged 69 following a short illness.

Gubba joined BBC Sport in 1972 as the replacement for David Coleman as the presenter on Sportsnight and went on to work on universally known sports programmes such as Grandstand and Match of the Day, as well as providing commentary for every Olympic Games from 1972 to 2012.

Gubba was most associated with football commentary, but he also lended his voice to coverage of golf, tennis, darts, and ice-skating, which no doubt helped him for his role as commentator on Dancing on Ice in recent years.

Football and computer games fans of a certain generation will most fondly remember Gubba as the voice of International Superstar Soccer ’98, the precursor to the Pro Evolution series, which was without a doubt the defining football video game of a generation.

Sure, the graphics and gameplay might look a bit dated compared to what’s on the market these days but back in the late 90s, ISS was tops and Gubba’s commentary was one of the number of various aspects that made it so good.

Rest in peace Tony, you’ll be sadly missed.
