An Iraqi NGO has reported that between 90-100 ’emo’ teenagers have been targeted and brutally murdered at the behest of religious extremists due to their unconventional appearances.

According to Iraqi-French filmmaker Hana al-Bayaty of Brussels Tribunal, the current death toll stands at “between 90 and 100”, as ’emo’ teenagers have been branded Western-influenced “devil worshipers” by the Iraqi government.

The systematic targeting of teens – who have been stoned to death for their appearance – stems from a statement released on Iraq’s interior ministry website this week, which condemns the “emo phenomenon” and declares its intent to “eliminate” the perceived threat it poses.

“The ‘Emo phenomenon’ or devil worshiping is being followed by the Moral Police who have the approval to eliminate [the phenomenon] as soon as possible since it’s detrimentally affecting the society and becoming a danger,” reads the statement.

“They wear strange, tight clothes that have pictures on them such as skulls and use stationary that are shaped as skulls. They also wear rings on their noses and tongues, and do other strange activities,” it continued.

The disgusting punishment meted out to the teens was detailed by one such teen who managed to escape and spoke to Cairo-based website al-Akhbar:

“‘First they throw concrete blocks at the boy’s arms, then at his legs, then the final blow is to his head, and if he is not dead then, they start all over again.”

Another Middle East news outlet, Sumaria News, is today reporting that as many as five ’emos’ were killed in Iraqi capital Baghdad last week, while they have also received reports of “mysterious” suicides from similarly attired teens that had occurred in other Iraqi provinces.
