Top Irish civil servant Kevin Cardiff has been rejected for a top EU job by a margin of one vote today.

Cardiff is the man who carried the can for the error over the ‘lost’ €3.6billion a few weeks back and this prompted many to question whether he was the right man to take his place on the European Court of Auditors.

A long-time employee in the Department of Finance, Cardiff was involved at the highest level in all the financial mess we have ploughed through over the last four years, including the ruinous bank bailout.

But he was nominated for the lucrative gig in Europe and had his conferral hearing today. After being ruthlessly grilled about the financial quagmire Ireland is now in, plus the error in accounting from a weeks ago, the lads and lassies on the committee voted against Cardiff getting the job.

It is rare for a government nominee to be rejected and those who questioned him from other countries cited the massive amount of e-mails they received from Ireland advising them not to approve Cardiff.

People power seems to have done for Cardiff.
