It’s the first Monday in December, better known as ‘Cyber Monday’, and it’s being reported this morning that Irish people will spend over €5m online today.

Online shoppers look set to splash the cash all day today, as it’s the country’s biggest online shopping day. As people realise that Christmas is only around the corner, they’re jumping online buying those last minute presents. So much so that Amazon has hired 10,000 extra staff to cover the Christmas period.

According to the Centre for Retail Research (CRR), Europe’s leading retail analysts, this year’s spending will be a massive 71 per cent more than last year’s Cyber Monday. They expect the €5.14m will be spent over the 16-hour period that most Irish people will be awake for. That works out to be around €320,000 an hour.

The CRR expects that a whopping total of €10m will have been spent online by Irish shoppers over the course of the weekend and today, dubbing it Ireland’s Cyber Weekend.

Remember lads, there’s only 21 days left until Christmas, so you better get those last minute presents in now, before it’s too late…
