It’s a man’s world… when it comes to Christmas spending

So who is actually the more romantic gender? A new study has revealed that men will spend 33% more on presents for their other halves this Christmas than women will do for theirs.

So who is actually the more romantic gender? A new study has revealed that men will spend 33% more on presents for their other halves this Christmas than women will do for theirs.

According to the research from Me to You, men expect their other halves to spend £144 on them this festive season, but can expect just an average of £99 spent by surveyed women. On the other hand women are expecting nearly £114 worth of presents but the study’s men are pledging to spend nearly £150.

“Married couples of course have certain expectations when it comes to receiving presents from each other,” said Me to You’s Caroline Weaver on the results.

“But at the end of the day, it is great to see that as the old saying goes it really is the thought that counts when it comes to gift buying.”

Seemingly tired of years of gift-wrapped black socks, 20% of men told the researchers that they would consider leaving their lady if she bought rubbish gifts. Really, lads?

Thankfully, 41% of couples revealed that the amount spent on presents was unimportant as long as the gifts were thoughtful. Considering that this is recession-ravaged Ireland, that’s perhaps the most heartening news we’ve heard in weeks.

“The results prove people want their present to show their partner cares about them, know them inside out and have not ignored their needs,” added Caroline of Me To You.

“Whatever you buy your partner for Christmas, the most important thing is that it lets them know how much you love them.” With that in mind, perhaps that Argos catalogue ironing board cover we’ve been eyeing up isn’t the best approach…
