Drive actor Ryan Gosling stars in this crime drama about a carnival motorcycle stunt driver who finds out he has a child and wants to meet his responsibilities. Gosling is teaming up again with director Derek Cianfrance, whom he worked on Blue Valentine with. Gosling is Luke, a bit of a loner, who roams from town to town with the carnival. When he reunites with a girlfriend Romina (Mendes), he discovers that they have a son together.

Luke decides he must make enough money to provide for the child and so starts to rob banks to fund the family. Unfortunately for Luke, he draws the attention of cop Avery Cross (Bradley Cooper) who then sets out to find him.

The film is moody, showing the anxieties of men trying to be the providers they want to be and how sometimes fate can get in the way of achieving dreams. The title refers to a native American word, a city in New York state called Schenectady. With some interesting plot twists and some well-built up tension, The Place Beyond the Pines is a must-see. Also starring Ray Liotta and Rose Byrne.

The Place Beyond the Pines is on at 10.30 am on Sunday 17 February at the Savoy.
