So lads, in case you’ve had blinkers on and haven’t seen all the Mother’s Day cards and paraphernalia in the shops, its Mammy’s Day this Sunday, March 10. That means you need to get your finger out and do something nice for her - after all she raised you.

And if she’s anything like the typical Irish Mammy that means she fed you on a solid diet of meat and potatoes, washed your sports gear and cleaned your room when you wouldn’t. She’s practically an angel (Have you smelt your sports gear?).

To help you figure out how to spoil your Mam this year, JOE did the hard work for you and picked the top 5 things you can do to celebrate the best woman in your life.

1. Bring her to the movies to see The Guilt Trip

There’s nothing your Mam will like more than to go on a Mother-son date to the flicks. She’ll feel important and, as you are her favourite man (this includes taking your Dad into the equation), she’ll feel special that (a) You’ve brought her out in public and (b) You’ve brought her to see the wonderful Mammy-favourite Barbara Streisand.

Even if she doesn’t know who Seth Rogan is, The Guilt Trip will have her laughing, and thus happy, with you. The movie tells the story of an inventor (Rogen) who invites his Mam (Streisand) on a road trip at the last minute, and is full of those moments where parents don't realise they are causing embarrassment. You might even enjoy it.

2. Bring her to lunch

Again, showing your Mam that you aren’t afraid to bring her out in public and show her off will win you points in her heart. It doesn’t have to be anywhere too fancy either, as your Mam’s generation would be delighted with a ham and cheese sandwich, a scone and some tea. Somewhere like Avoca should do the trick, as Mams like the cake selection and they have some of the best chips around. She gets fed, you get fed, it's a win/win.

3. Buy her flowers and a card

Skip the petrol station and shell out for some decent flowers at a proper flower shop. Mam’s love flowers, even those daisies you picked her when you were little. Couple this with a lovely card, and maybe some swanky chocolates and she’ll think you are the best son in the whole wide world…and then she’ll probably feed you as a reward.

4. Fix that thing she has been nagging you about

You know you should have done it before now, but somehow time just got away from you. If you arrive up with the tool kit, intent on fixing the thing that's broken, she’ll be delighted. There’s nothing women like more than a man working, and in the time that you fix the thing, she’ll probably have the tea on. The bonus here is that she’ll stop nagging you about the thing that is broken.

5. Bring her shopping

We won’t lie; you’ll need stamina for this one. Offering to bring your Mam shopping for clothes will take everything you’ve got but if you follow some basic rules, it’ll be worth it in the end. Ensure you tell her everything looks good on her, offer to hold the clothes she has selected while she browses and do not, whatever you do, complain about how long this is taking. If you can, rope a sibling into the mix and it’ll only be half the work.
