JOE’s favourite old school football ads

JOE

The odd time we get around to reminiscing about the past in the JOE office, and today we’ve been talking about our favourite football ads

With a stroke of the beard and a wistful look in our eye, we have cast our mind back to the simpler days of playing football on the green with a battered old ball that you would carry around by the one patch that was still attached to it, and the days when these great football ads had us thinking that if we could just get a pair of Predators, we’d be unstoppable.

We start off the list with a true classic, the Parklife advert from Nike, it had a brilliant soundtrack to boot.

This is pretty much the first football ad we remember, and it finally explained what the word ‘isotonic’ meant to us. We didn’t ask why there was a vending machine in the England dressing room, but we did admire the technique on Barnes to volley the can into the bin.

Pepsi managed to put together some of the best players in the world to make this brilliant Gladiator based ad, like Roberto Carlos, David Beckham and Francesco Totti, who we have a man crush on.

This ad pushed the Elvis v JXL song to the top of the charts, and had us all wanting to go and buy a silver football. Here’s a video that slaps together all the different versions of the iconic commercial so you can see the number of different players involved.

That said, we couldn’t include that without the lads at Apres Match doing their best impression of it.

Another Nike ad (to be fair they’ve had some absolute crackers) and few are better than this brilliant one. Luis Figo, Dwight Yorke, Andy Cole, Pep Guardiola and Hidetoshi Nakata. We’ve always said you don’t see enough of the Nak.

Last but certainly not least in the list is one of very few ads which have been remembered quite as well as this brilliant one from Nike. The concept is pretty simple, it’s just a bunch of lads playing football in an airport, but those lads happen to be some of the best footballers we’ve ever seen.
