Nearly six years after the death of her husband, Hazel Lawlor is to sue the Sunday Independent for libel.
The day Liam Lawlor died in a Moscow car crash, the Indo ran with the headline ‘Lawlor killed in red-light district with teenage girl’.
It alleged that the disgraced former Dublin County West TD was with a woman likely to be an underage prostitute at the time of his death. In fact, Julia Kushnir was 29-years of age, and worked as a translator and legal assistant.
She sued the Sunday Independent in 2007, and her case was settled out of court. Under Irish law, you cannot libel the dead, but Lawlor believes that she has a case that she herself was libelled.
She is convinced that the newspaper was aware that Ms Kushnir wasn’t a prostitute when they printed the story. Ms Lawlor has stated that the Sunday Independent breached her privacy and that their actions have caused her “massive trauma”.
