Luis Suarez sort of issues a ‘come and get me’ plea to Champions League clubs

Luis Suarez has said he is very happy at Liverpool but he would 'welcome' talking to other teams.

As we said earlier, with no actual football being played, this is always the time of year that a player will give an interview abroad that will work its way back into the press around here.

This time it is Luis Suarez, who is on international duty with Uruguay back home, that has ensured he will be all over tomorrow’s back pages. The striker gave an interview there and the quotes have been picked up by the Liverpool Echo.

When asked about his future, Suarez was not 100 per cent clear. "I am very happy at Liverpool but you never know in football," he said.

"A player's ambition is always there, the ambition of wanting to play in elite teams is always there.

"I'm in a world-class team, an elite team like Liverpool. We have to realise we have a new manager who is imposing a philosophy and a way of playing that the players are adapting to as best we can. We hope that it will bear fruit next year.”

So far, so good if you’re a Liverpool fan. But he goes on to say: "If another team comes around with more prospects of competing in international club competition games, which is willing to have me, they are welcome.

"We would talk to the club, we would see if I want to go, if I don't want to go."

This has been interpreted as a call to Champions League clubs, such as Bayern Munich and Juventus who have already been linked with the Premier League top scorer, to make an offer this summer.

Of course, perhaps Suarez, who does genuinely seem to love playing at Anfield, is just keeping his options open. He is contracted to Liverpool until 2017 so for now, he is going nowhere.
