French horse Makfi defied the odds to finish ahead of the pack in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket this afternoon.

33/1 shot Makfi was the surprise winner of the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket this afternoon.

In the first classic of the flat racing season, all eyes were on Aidan O’Brien’s St. Nicholas Abbey, who was expected to romp home to victory and had moved to 6/5 favourite before the race set off.

The favourite was nowhere to be seen at the finish however, finishing way back in sixth place as French colt Makfi, trained by Mikel Delzangles and ridden by Christophe Lemaire, came home ahead of Dick Turpin in second and third-placed Canford Cliffs.
