Ajax striker Luis Suarez has reportedly told officials at the club that he is interested in a move to Tottenham Hotspur.
The Uruguay international has been banging in the goals for the Amsterdam club since joining in 2007 with 81 goals in 108 appearances.
He has netted 16 times in 38 internationals for Uruguay and was one of the star performers at the World Cup in South Africa during the summer, forming a lethal partnership with Diego Forlan as Uruguay progressed to the semi-finals, where they were beaten by Holland.
The 23-year old has long been target for some of Europe’s top clubs, including Manchester United, Barcelona and Juventus and he is expected to leave Ajax in January or next summer.
With Robbie Keane out of favour and Peter Crouch struggling to find the net, Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is on the lookout for a top class striker to add to his squad.
Suarez has made it known that he would like to talk to Spurs if a transfer fee can be agreed between the sides, but he has also made it clear that he will not force a move. Suarez’s current contract at Ajax does not expire until 2013.
“Suarez has heard of interest from Tottenham and he would be interested in the possibility,†an Ajax insider told Goal.com UK.
“Maybe before he thought Spurs were too small for him but now he would go there if the right deal was agreed by everyone.
“He would like to challenge himself in one of the big European leagues but at the same time Ajax don't want to sell him and he is very content here.
“To sign him in January would be very expensive as we would need a replacement and the best players cost a lot of money. I don't know if Tottenham can pay what it would take to sign him.â€
Suarez would cost in the region of £25 million (€29 million), but if a proposed move to Tottenham does go ahead, it is likely that it would be delayed until next summer as Suarez is up-tied and would not be able to feature in the Champions League should Tottenham make it to the knockout stages.
