National League semi-finals on the way back

The GAA have agreed to reintroduce the semi-final stage of the National Football and Hurling Leagues, the Irish Independent reports.

Officials are desperate to bring some zest back into the competition which has lost its prestige somewhat in recent times.

However, the U-turn on the decision by Central Council will only apply to Division 1 in the NFL and NHL, and will not apply until the 2012 season as it necessitates a rule change which can only be made by Congress.

The eradication of the semi-finals, in football three years ago and in hurling two years ago, was seen as a necessity to compete the leagues early.

That change has not pleased everyone and, in particular, the hurling folk for whom it has lessened opportunities for meaningful competition.

The revival of the semi-finals will increase the running time from eight to nine weekends, which is why the decision has to be passed by Congress.
