Notts Forest centre-half Luke Chambers hopes to secure a place on Trapattoni’s Ireland squad.
The 25-year-old is currently applying for Irish citizenship, to which he is entitled through his maternal grandfather.
His decision to go for the passport comes after il Trap told Chambers to start the citizenship process in order to be able to apply for a passport, therefore adhering to the FIFA rules on international eligibility.
English-born Chambers has confirmed that the FAI has been in touch with him about his future declaration.
"There has been some contact," he says. " They have asked me to become an Irish citizen."
"I don't know too much about what might happen. But I qualify through my mother's father and it is good to be recognised at that level.
"Playing international football is a chance you can't turn down and Ireland are a very good side.
"I'm not sure if I will be involved in the Macedonia game. It may be after that before things get sorted."
Clearly he meant to say that he has always considered himself Irish and would be proud to don the Ireland strip when he steps out on the pitch. He must have just forgotten that bit.
