Notts County to fly high in the league with the help of cannabis lamps

They say the grass is always greener on the other side, but the best grass in town looks like it will be at Notts County next season.

From next season, fans at Meadow Lance can expect to be flying-high – in the league of course – after the club announced it is to use heat lamps seized by police in raids on local cannabis farms to help grow the pitch grass.

And with the help of local students, the club are to save themselves a pretty penny while also improving the surface.

The lamps, which would normally simply be crushed and recycled, are being rigged up by University students in conjunction with the local police force and will be donated to the club upon completion. County will then in turn make a donation to the Nottinghamshire Constabulary’s charity of choice.

County stadium manager Greg Smith is clearly delighted with the cost-effective measures to help the team.

“Normally to buy one rig you are looking at between £10,000 and £15,000,” he told the BBC.

“We've got a main stand that doesn't allow the light in during the winter. So, we can have them from the start of October through to the end of February, hopefully growing grass for us.”

Currently mid-table in League One, supporters of the oldest club in the world will barely be able to believe their eyes next season when they see the pitch. But it will all be above board!
