Animal rights group PETA’s latest advertisement has been described as “over the top” by the mother of a shark attack victim.

The proposed billboard features a shark with a disembodied and bloodied human leg in its mouth, accompanying the slogan “Payback is Hell, Go Vegan.” The billboard is intended to be posted near the site of a shark attack that occured in Florida last week.

The 21-year-old victim of the attack, CJ Wickersham, remains in stable condition after receiving 800 stitches from a gaping wound to his left thigh while spear-fishing on Anna Marie Island last week. PETA attempted to post the billboard on that very island after struggling to find a suitable location, will settle for nearby Manatee County.

“I’m not even going to dignify them with a response,” the victim’s mother has the US press when asked her opinion of the controversial billboard.

“It’s not even worth my response. They are over the top. If they don’t want to eat meat and fish, good for them; you can do whatever you want, and I’ll do what I want.”

“We’re still trying to find the best spot that would give maximum exposure at the best rates,” PETA spokesperson Ashley Byrne told FoxNews.com.

“With the shark attack in the news, we thought it’d be a good time to remind people that sharks are not the world’s biggest predator – we are.”

You stay classy, PETA.
