Admittedly, ‘legends’ might be stretching it for a couple of names in here.
Footballers coming to the end of their careers are faced with a number of choices.
Some will accept that they’re not as good as they once were, hang up their boots and disappear barely without trace. Others will settle for a career in the media and others still will play on despite their declining quality, desperately seeking one last pay cheque that will ensure that they don’t have to work a day for the rest of their lives.
Thankfully for those that take the latter option, there are a few outposts where teams are happy to take a chance on a faded superstar or two and the one that’s proving pretty popular at the moment is the Indian Super League, or the Hero Indian Super League to give it its proper title, which will kick off with the highly anticipated meeting of Atletico de Kolkata and Mumbai City FC on October 12.
Some of the legends that will participate in the new league posed for a selfie at the launch of the league in Mumbai recently; they would have made for a decent seven-a-side team around 2003 or so and considering that the side would need a goalkeeper, we’re sorry to have to tell Mikael Silvestre that he’s going to be left-back… left back on the bench that is.
