There was no joy tonight for either of the League of Ireland sides in action in the Europea League first qualifying round

Ger O’Brien and Killian Brennan, pictured above, were both devastated at the final whistle tonight as St. Patrick’s Athletic were beaten by Zalgiris Vilnius in Richmond Park tonight.

It was a great effort in the away leg to come back home with two away goals to hang on to, but Vilnius proved too strong for Liam Buckley’s men, as they sunk to a 1-2 defeat.

Killian Brennan scored an 84th minute penalty to give the home side belief after Mantas Kuklys and Kamil Bilinski had given Vilnius the lead, but it wasn’t enough in the end.

Gabriel Sava too was fairly dejected as he could do nothing to stop Malmo FF progressing to the next round either.

The Swedish side left it late to get their second, which sealed the win through Simon Kroon in the 92nd minute, and having taken a clean sheet away with them, they will feel disappointed that they collapsed at the end.
