Protestors break through gates of Government Buildings

A group of about 100 protestors taking part in a Sinn Féin demonstration have broken through the security cordon at the gates of Government Buildings this afternoon.

The protestors were calling for the immediate resignation of the Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, following yesterday’s bailout announcement.

After a few minutes Gardaí managed to push back the crowd and they have now rejoined the protest at Merrion Square.

Some members of the group were captured on film by BBC News breaking through the Merrion Street gates of the complex – which houses the Department of the Taoiseach – amid the Garda resistance.
