Remember the evicted coupled from Killiney? They have 13 flats in London too

First we were shocked when the Kellys were evicted from their home. Now we're just confused. As well as owned loads of other houses in Ireland, they also have property in London...

Ireland was shocked last week when an elderly couple was evicted from their home. But that shock was subsequently replaced by a severe case of WTF when it was revealed that said couple actually had an entire property empire under the belts.

The Irish Times reports today that the story is about to get a little bit more interesting as now it has been revealed that the couple own a further 13 flats in London.

Brendan and Asta Kelly from St Matthias Wood in Killiney were evicted from their home last week due to a mass amount of debt that was owed to the Irish Bank Resolution Corporation. Apparently the couple had stopped paying their mortgage and were served with an eviction notice two years ago. Let’s just say that Ireland felt awful compassionate when this video of their eviction emerged.

For the majority of us this compassion was short lived when it was revealed that the couple owned a further 21 properties in Dublin (most of them in illustrious south city areas). Mr and Mrs Kelly had splashed out on the property market in the late 1990s and early 2000s and were actually sitting on a property empire.

Suddenly the fact that they were living in a tent outside their St Matthias Wood home didn’t pull on the heartstrings as much as it had before their property portfolio was brought out into the open.

In a further, shocking twist to the story, it has emerged today that the couple are also the owners of 13 more apartments in London. All of the properties are located in the London docklands area – an area that is noted for its brand new, modern apartment complexes.

Let’s just say that we imagine the public interest in the eviction of the couple is starting to wane very quickly.

Speaking about the situation last week, the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, said that the eviction was “peculiar” and that he could not understand why the couple had not made other living arrangements seeing as how they were served with a repossession order two years ago.

The Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan, also spoke out about the Kellys.

“We have no pledge to keep people in 21 different homes and we must distinguish between people who can’t pay and people who won’t pay,” he said.

We wonder if the Occupy Dame Street Movement will continue to stand behind the couple now that this new information has come to light…
