Thanks to the new rules regarding product placement on TV, the corner shop in Fair City is turning into a Spar, netting RTE a nice few quid.

It is widely reported today that the national broadcaster will pocket €900,000 over the next three years in the deal, while the retailer has said it looks forward to being “part of the storyline and script”.

We assume that means a huge increase in plots regarding where you can get two Snickers for €1.50 or a murder committed with an over-filled breakfast roll.

Those two plotlines would be a huge improvement over what we usually have to endure from the Carrigstown ‘drama’ that inexplicably pulls in over 500,000 viewers an episode.

Just so long as they don’t bring in the actors from the current Spar ads it might just be bearable.
