Speed van targeted in arson attack

A speed camera van has been damaged in an arson attack in Dundalk this morning, gardaí have revealed.

The GoSafe van was attacked around 4.45am on Carrick Road and gardaí in Dundalk are appealing for information on a silver car seen in the area at the time of the attack, which was believed to have had two occupants.

“I want to condemn in the strongest possible terms this morning’s attack on a GoSafe van and GoSafe staff. It was an outrageous and reckless act which could have had grave and tragic consequences,” said Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy.

He continued, “GoSafe van personnel are out on our roads day and night working with An Garda Síochána to reduce speed-related collisions and stop the needless loss of lives on our roads.

“It is important work directed at ensuring that fewer families and communities here have to endure the pain and suffering which follows collisions and deaths on our roads.”

GoSafe is a private company contracted to operate mobile safety cameras in Ireland on behalf of the Garda National Traffic Bureau (GNTB).

On a phased basis, GoSafe will provide 6,000 enforcement hours and 1,475 survey hours per month across the country.
