Steven Reid faces six weeks on the sidelines

Former Irish international midfielder Steven Reid faces six weeks on the sidelines after tearing cartilage in his knee during West Brom’s defeat to Manchester United on Saturday.

The injury prone 29-year old was forced off in the second half having impressed at right back in a game in which the Baggies were desperately unlucky to finish on the losing side.

Having begun to feature in Roberto di Matteo’s starting XI on a regular basis, the injury is a massive blow to Reid, who will undergo surgery on the problem and return to action towards the end of February.

“It's really bad news for Steven,” said di Matteo.

“He is an important member of our squad and was playing well (on Saturday) until he was forced off.

“The big thing about him is that he offers cover for so many positions.

“But he's likely to be out for a minimum of six weeks. All we can do is wish him well with his surgery and a speedy recovery.”

Reid retired from international football in July of last year, but has since hinted that he may return should there be a lack of options (which there patently is) in midfield.
